In our weekly update, we bring you new postcards from prewar Japan. This week the publisher Seiundō (青雲堂) takes us on a trip to the 1930s Tokyo, our first visit to Japan’s modern capital. Photographs on the postcards capture the city as it was between two great disasters that changed its face forever. The first of these was the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923 and the subsequent fire, after which Tokyo had to be rebuilt practically from scratch. Results of the massive effort and its grand scale are captured in the photographs. These would be but ephemeral, though, as the second disaster, the Second World War, would again raze almost the whole city. Indeed, the Second World War is closely related to the subject of this week’s postcards, which also feature rare Japanese military-themed stamps on the back side. We advise the reader to take the historical context into account when browsing these.
